- Dollar General Overcharged Me: Shelf Price vs Register PriceIn New York, stores must charge no more than the lowest advertised, written, posted or marked price, according to the New York Attorney General. The AG found 43% of 900+ Dollar General inspection reports (2021–2023) failed price accuracy by more than 2%, and secret shoppers were overcharged on about 14% of items in 11 stores. Show the shelf tag and receipt at the store and ask for the difference.
- Will Dollar General refund me because of the New York settlement? Not automatically. The settlement’s $1.875 million is food and goods donated to a nonprofit as the civil penalty, not a refund fund for shoppers, and the AG release does not describe individual refunds. Going forward, New York stores must honor the lowest listed price, so ask for the difference at the register.
